Life and Health Insurance Licensing Exam Questions
By Victoria Trix
As a candidate for licensing as an agent in the field of health and life insurance sales, the prerequisite courses and follow up study seminars are not necessarily all that you will need to prepare yourself for passing the required state exams. When registering and studying for your health and life insurance licensing exam, it helps to know what the test content of the exam questions will be. There will, invariably, be portions of the test that you have a better comprehension of than others, and knowing the outline of the test question topics and format will help you to prioritize your areas of study.
With 150 exam questions and a 2 ½ hour time limit, there are eighteen general test subheadings in the health and life insurance exam. The following provides a breakdown of the licensing exam question categories, as well as the percentage of the test that is covered in each portion: insurance regulation (5%); general insurance (5%); life insurance basics (7%); life insurance policies (7%); life insurance policy provisions, options, and riders (8%); annuities (6%); federal tax considerations for life insurance and annuities (5%); and qualified plans (4%). The health insurance portion of the exam questions cover health insurance basics (5%); individual health insurance policy general provisions (4%); disability income and related insurance (3%); medical plans (8%); health maintenance organizations (3%); group health insurance (7%); dental insurance (2%); insurance for senior citizens and special needs individuals (8%); federal tax considerations for health insurance (3%); and additional considerations for life and health insurance counselors (10%).
All of the questions on the test will be multiple choice, although there are three different test question formats. Some of the exam questions will be formatted as direct question, some as incomplete sentences, and the remainder as “all of the following except”. There will be four possible answers to each exam question for the candidate to choose from.
In order to pass the licensing exam, the candidate must correctly answer 70% of the questions in each of the health insurance and life insurance portions. Of course, any unanswered questions will be considered incorrect, and be counted against the overall score. In the event that you fail the exam on your first attempt, the rules applying to the retaking of all or portions of your exam will vary from state to state, so be sure to check with your test administrator for requirements.
In addition to continuing your studies, including obtaining practice tests for review, prior to taking the licensing exams for health and life insurance agency, not being surprised by the exam question format will help to relieve some of the test day tensions and allow you to calmly and successfully complete your examination.
